IBM PS/2 N33 SX

The image is clickable

1991.

IBM's "little black" PS/2 N33 SX was shown the latest design for people on the go. A tough little machine in black colour with a variety of features and performance.

Small because IBM took the floppy disk drive out of the shell and had it as an equipment. This saved weights and measures. It weighed only 2.5 kg, which was pretty good in its time. To further reduce the computer's measurements were the numeric part of the keyboard away. It could be purchased as optional.

To the functions you had various energy-saving features, like automatic shut-off of those programs that were not in use, pause the current program when the lid was closed and continued where it was after the lid was opened again. LEDs told you about functions that were active and a level meter told you about the battery level.

The performance of the Intel 30386SX processor was 20 Mhz and provided support for 32-bit, 386-applications. The external 3.5" floppy drive of 1.44 MB was easily connected when you needed to download a new program or data. The hard disk of 40 MB had an average seek time at 19 ms. RAM was 2 MB and reacted at 80 ns and could be expanded with memory modules of 2 MB or 4 MB.

Thanks to Lars Olejnik, Falsterbo, for valuable information.
