Amstrad PPC 640

The image is clickable

1988.

A few years earlier Amstrad introduced a IBM compatible desktop PC 1512 DD and had a relativly good success in Europe. Now they wanted to try the same with a portable unit, and presented two different models that were essentially the same performance as the stationary model. One had less RAM size - PPC 512 - and the second with major RAM size - PPC 640. Appearance was the same, besides that PPC 512 was beige and PPC 640 was grey.

Unfortunately, the built-in green monochrome screen was only of 9", which probably contributed to the fact that the model was not to popular. Admittedly you could connect to an external display, but it was far from accessible for everyone. The success to these unique designed portables was definitely not as big as for the stationary predecessor.
